What is Boat Insurance?
Just as a driver needs automobile insurance, a boater needs to have Boat Insurance to cover the boat and liability. Boat Insurance is required for anyone in BC who has their boat moored at a Marina or a Yacht Club or who wants protection against accidents, theft, vandalism and liability.
What does Boat Insurance Cover?
Boat Insurance protects you and your vessel against accidents, theft, vandalism and personal liability. Most boat policies cover physical damage to the hull, sails, machinery, furnishings, and most other equipment that is normally used on board. Other dangers covered are vandalism, malicious mischief and damage which results from collision or sinking.
You are also insured against liability losses. You are covered for damage you may cause to another boat, yacht, personal water craft, sailboat, or dock, and for the bodily injury or death to another person while operating your vessel.
However, your Boat Insurance will not cover you against normal wear and tear, deterioration, or problems with mold, rot, or animal damage.
Under most policies, the trailer that carries your vessel can also be insured against damage or liability.
You may purchase optional coverage’s as well, such as:
Coverage for your personal property
Coverage for your fishing vessel and fishing gear
Coverage against injury to you caused by an uninsured boater
The annual insurance premium will be determined based on the type of boat (power versus sail), its value, and where you use it.
